Coaching Philosophy
As an individual, I believe in commitment,
responsibility, a strong work ethic, and communication. As a leader on the
court, I will utilize these characteristics to develop and support a level of
playing that will be enriching and measurable. My philosophy is based on three
objectives that I take seriously. The first objective is taking a group of
individuals and turning them into a team. The second objective is to push the
players to play beyond what they think their limits are. Lastly, to make it a
positive experience for each player. Winning is a goal, but each player should
focus on his/her effort, not the outcome. As a coach, I will emphasize that
winning is not everything; it’s the way you react to the challenges that lay in
front of you.
My first objective is to challenge individuals each day to become a team on and off the court. Simply by doing team drills on the court and bonding activities off the court. This will challenge each player to get out of their comfort zone and open up to their team. For this, each player will have a better understanding about their teammates and can relate to them just not on the court. This will lead to trusting each other both on and off the court and understand what it means to be a team.
My second objective will be to always push my players to their full potential and more. Many players think they cannot exceed beyond what they think is their limit. As a coach, I will build trust in each player and challenge them beyond their limits. I can have drills that test them to push beyond their limits to challenge them to be stronger physically and mentally. For example, will do drills that test them as individuals as well as showing them they have to trust me. Since I have built the trust in them, each player will understand that I am only making them better for life and in the sport. Once the athlete is pushed beyond their limits, they will be physically, psychologically and socially more confident in themselves. Each player will understand the sky is the limit both in life, as well as on the court.
Final objective is to have a successful team; you need to have a positive experience. I will do anything in my power to have each player enjoy the sport and their experience with me. Also, with the positive experiences it will build a positive team culture. This will run parallel to having fun because if you are enjoying the experience, you will be more out to have fun. Not only that you will work harder for each other because you trust that each one is doing the same.
When a situation arises in which I must choose among these objectives, my priorities will go in order as I present them at the beginning. I will make sure that my culture is strong from the beginning that will make it for more enjoyable season. Then I will challenge each player beyond their limits to show that they can do anything if they put their mind to it. Lastly all players will have a positive experience that if any attitudes arise I will be consent and limited them from the beginning.
All players are guaranteed the opportunity to learn and play the sport. They will attend practices, which will create environment where all players feel valued and respected. I believe coaches that collaborate, become more effective coach. They sharpen each other’s coaching skills, share ideas for player’s improvement, and believe in a common goal for player achievement. My work ethic is to be a life-long learner and I want that to carry that to my team.
I believe as a coach, it is my responsibility to help the athlete both on and off the court. I take very serious and included in team rules about the athlete behavior both on and off the court. I believe they are a student before athlete and that means their behavior off the court plays a major role on the court.
Lastly I believe in well-organized efficient practices that focus not just on repetition of the skill, but on mastering it through carefully designated drills and games are far better than long practices. Likewise, I will have more games and which competition, we enter to give my athletes well-rounded competition. This will prepare them for life and teach them the skills they will need.
Through basketball, it is my intent to teach the players the importance of responsibility, respect, discipline, teamwork, and hard work. If the student/athletes can leave the program with an understanding of the previously listed five criteria’s, then it is my belief they will be prepared for the various challenges they will face throughout their life.
